Why Curing Method Decides Your Block Quality More Than the Machine Does

2 March 2026 · 6 min read · Qisheng Machinery

A block machine does one job: it forms the shape and compacts the mix. It does not create strength. Strength is created in the days after moulding, by the hydration of cement under the right temperature and moisture. Two plants with identical machines and identical mixes, but different curing, will ship products that a customer can tell apart by hand.

The three levers

  • Time: most of the design strength arrives in the first 7 days, but the mix keeps gaining for 28. Blocks shipped on day 2 are shipped weak.
  • Moisture: hydration needs water. Blocks that dry out in a hot yard stop gaining strength entirely; they do not recover later.
  • Temperature: a mild increase speeds hydration up to a point, but excessive heat at early age creates a weak microstructure that never develops full strength.

What this means for plant design

If you are curing on an open yard in a hot, dry climate, you are losing strength every day and paying for it in cement. A covered curing area, a shade structure and a watering routine will improve product quality more cheaply than any machine upgrade. Move up one step and you are into a proper three-dimensional curing system, where each layer of brick sits with its own pallet in a controlled chamber. That is what our QSGW line provides, and it is why that line is specified for permeable pavers and imitation-stone products where strength and surface both carry a price.

How to tell if you have a curing problem

  • Product from the same mix shows large strength variation between batches, a classic curing-variance signature.
  • Blocks break along the bottom more often than the top. The bottom dried out first.
  • Cement consumption keeps creeping up just to hold the same strength. You are buying strength to replace the curing you are losing.
